This chapter talked about have a "green" school and teacher students about sustainability along with their core subjects. This sounds like a great idea. I really think that something like this would work in rural areas, especially in farming communities. The students could learn about the ins and outs or farming, they could create a school farm, and they would learn how to create a sustainable future for generations to come.
This may also work in bigger cities. Students could learn about the damaging effects that pollution has on the environment. They could learn how to change their city's use of carbon and how they can create a "better, healthier" city to live in.
I ma not sure how many school would be interested in this type of school, but it sounds like a great idea. If we want a clean and healthy place for our future generations to live, we need to do something about it now. Teaching our students about sustainability may be the way we need to go.

Bridging Differences Blog
This site had many different blogs to read and following. Some of them had to do with lessons we can learn from Chinese classrooms, charter schools, and what works best-Help of Punishment.
This blog seems like something that would be a great resource when wanting to try something new in your classroom or when you are "stuck" and don't know how to resolve something in your classroom.

Free Technology for Teachers
This website had great ideas on what to do on back to school nights. It suggested that teachers create a QR code instead of having handouts to give to parents. Using that QR code, parents could access a calendar of events, contact information, links to websites and Google Docs, etc.
I thought this was pretty cool! Parents would be able to see new information that is added on throughout the school year without having to send papers home, which sometimes they don't always get.
I may try this for this school year.

ASCD Website
This website had blogs, webinars and videos. Some of the videos talked about have we need to front load before we ask the kids to do something. We need to show them how to do something and practice it before we asked them to do it.
Some webinars were about engagement and learning strategies. The webinars were all free!
Some of the blogs were about learning goals and interventions.

Chapter 12 response
Something that I connected with was..."With the resources available today for use in the classroom such as interactive software, digital imagine, audio and video creation tools, on-demand video libraries, computers and LCD projectors, and Web 2.0 tools, the hardest job may be choosing which tool to use and how to integrate it into the classroom."
We have all these great resources, but how do we use the in the classroom? How do we incorporate it throughout the day? These are some of the questions that I have. We have laptops and Ipads in our school. A lot of the times, the laptops are being used to play IXL and the Ipads are being used to play IXL also, or games. Educational games are great, but we can do so much more with these, but what can we do? I think that teachers all need to take a class on how to integrate technology in their classrooms and how to use the equipment. Most of the time, the students know how to use the laptops, Ipads, etc, more than the teacher.
We need to be kept up to speed on all the changes that are happening in technology. I feel that if we give our students as much exposure to technology that they will become more successful once they are in high school, college, or in the "real" world.

Chapter 5 Response
Something in the reading that made me think of how students today are different from when I went to school, (which wasn't that long ago), was "Today's student, nearly everywhere in the world, lives in a technological area in which the internet and Google and text messaging never didn't exist." A lot of the students these days couldn't imagine a world without the internet or text messaging. When I was a kid, we would use the house phone to call our friends and meet up with them on our bikes. We would ride our bikes and our parents always knew where we were. Now, we have texting. Parents can contact their children at all times, you can get a hold of your friends at any time of the day, etc. It is very different, but it has made life a little more convenient.
Google has also changed the lives of our students, and our own. We use Google when we want to know something we are questioning, to do research, to look for recipes, etc. It is something that we use to get quick results. Students don't know how to use the library to do research, they just use the internet. Some of my 4th graders from last year didn't know what an encyclopedia was.
Having the internet has made a huge impact on our lives. We can now talk to people from across the globe, keep in contact with friends or family on Facebook, Skype, and email that have moved away. You can find old friends and reconnect with them. We have internet on our phones. If we want to know something quickly, like what movie is playing at the local theater, you can just look it up. There would have never been online classes that people could take to further their education.
There have also been some "bad sides" to the internet, but isn't there always a "bad side" to everything?
The only downfall, I think, is that some kids are always using technology to "socialize" with their peers. They don't know how to communicate with each other because of texting or instant messaging. They don't know how to do research using books, journals, magazines, etc., because they just use the internet or their phones. Also, with the internet, not everyone uses it as a "good" tool. They use it to cheat on spouses, lure in underage children, etc. They also use text messaging to send inappropriate pictures to (we should all take a lesson from Anthony Weiner on this one).
The internet, Google and texting has improved our lives, but have also hindered them. With something good, something bad always seems to follow.

Kahoot!
Have any of you every used Kahoot!? It is so much fun and the kids love it. It is an online quiz site and there are quizzes that are already created or you can create their own. Students use their laptops, tablets, or smartphones to answer the questions.
We used it last night with our high school students. We had questions about the students and staff in our Upward Bound group. They had a blast. When we were done playing, they wanted to play again.
I highly recommend this!
The website is Kahoot.it
Have fun!
